A Sneak Peek

We have been working on a project about Animals in Winter and we read the story called "The Mitten" by Jan Brett.  It gave us an idea to write our own story.
We had a few ideas of what to write the story about using different pieces of clothing. We thought of snowpants, shirts, gloves, boots and then decided on a backpack.  We chose to have two backpacks because there are two children in the story and we couldn't decide whether to have a boy or a girl so we chose to have both.

We have been learning interesting information about each of the animals from different books and put those facts into our story.  We have also been making this like a math story because at the end of each part, we made a math equation to go with what was happening in the story.

We are still writing our story (because it takes  a long time to write) but are planning to have a book launch when we are done.  We will let you know the details when it comes closer to the date.

This is a sneak peek from our story called The Backpacks.

Before long, the sun started to set and the first star appeared.  Millions of other stars joined the first star and when the moon was at the highest part in the sky, it was night.  The moon shone brightly on the two lonely backpacks lying all by themselves behind the school.

Suddenly two mice appeared from their tunnel under the snow out looking for a warm place to sleep and a little bedtime snack.  “Sniff, sniff… It smells like cheese and crackers.” They said.  They kept scurrying on the snow until they came upon the backpacks. They buried themselves deep, deep in the backpack and started snacking on the leftover cheese and crackers.  0+2=2

Stay tuned for the rest of our story.  We hope to be done by the end of April.

An Update from Room 117

Our New Project
This week we found out our new project! We watched the story "Bear Snores On", looked at pictures of animals changing colours and hibernating, read the story "Under the Snow" and played hangman to figure it out. We are so excited about it! We started to make a web about all the things we know about Animals in Winter and next week we will start building things about what we know. We will also be going on some field visits in the next few weeks to learn more. Stay tuned for more information.  If you have books about animals in winter at home, any artifacts about winter animals in Alberta or know of any experts, please let Ms. Johnson know.

Dear Snow
We finally finished writing our letters to the snow and telling it why we either loved or hated it. We had some great ideas! If you are in the school, you should come in and take a look at them to see what we did. We will put them up on our blog next week in case you can't get in to see them.

Beach Day/Ice Cream Sale
Today was Beach Day and we got to wear our beach stuff to school! It was funny wearing shorts when there was snow outside. We had ice cream at the ice cream sale. It was yummy!

Pizza Lunch
Next Friday(February 4) is pizza lunch day! We love pizza lunch. Well, some of us don't but most of us do. We get to have our own big piece of pizza. Thank you for ordering it for us!
